Born in Meximieux, in Bresse, Claude Favre, seigneur de Vaugelas, directed the activities of the Académie Française and published, in 1647, the Remarques sur la langue française, not so much to regulate but to guide the development of the French language. Reacting against the "Latinists," he built his theories of language on usage, based on the "good taste" of the royal court and the city. Vauge-las was elected to the Académie française in 1634.
